What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda (I-y&r-'ved-&) is an intricate healing system originated in India more than 5,000 years ago. It is based on the wellness principle that "Prevention is better than cure." With its holistic view it aims at balancing the whole person, i.e. Body, Mind, and Spirit. The word 'Ayurveda' comes from the words 'Ayus' = life and 'veda' = knowledge. Ayurveda is also known as 'the Mother of Medicine.' According to Ayurveda we are all governed by three doshas (humors or forces): Vata (air), Pitta (fire), and Kapha (water).
